Preparing for Worship on November 15 2015

Several people this week have shared with me that last Sunday there was a definite moving of God in our time together. As I prayed for the worship on Saturday evening the Lord placed on my heart the name of a person who had missed several weeks from church. When I called them that evening they confided in me that they had been visiting other churches looking for something that had not found at our church.  God spoke to my heart and I implored them to consider being with us on Sunday because I sensed God was moving in our midst.  Even before the worship began last Sunday a person told me that they had listened to the rehearsal of the worship team and the songs for last Sunday were "awesome".  The worship began and I did not see the person I had spoken too on Saturday evening.
When the sermon bumper clip ran on the screen and I walked to the pulpit and looked out across the congregation, the first person I saw was the person I spoke to on Saturday. When the worship came to a close and I had prayed the prayer of benediction - that person came to me and thanked me for the phone call from the previous evening. They then shared with me that God had clearly spoken to them and they had found what they had been seeking.  The are so happy to be part of North Raleigh Church of the Nazarene!

What are you seeking for? Have you missed worship at NRN recently?  God is moving my heart for the message marinating in my spirit. This Sunday we close the teaching series with a message entitled: Be Prayerful.  You will not want to miss it!

Here is the planned order of worship for tomorrow:

We begin with a welcome and a Scriptural Call to Worship.  Then we stand to sing to our Great God!

We now pause to go before the Throne of God in prayer.

Most people’s tendency when preparing to host such a person for dinner is to focus on external things, such as what they will cook, and making sure the house is spotless. Such preparations actually say very little about our personal relationship with those we host. If we hope to really get to know others and develop strong relationships with them, we should give less thought to such external things and more thought to how we might connect with those we will host on a personal level. As we conclude our series on how God calls us to prepare for the return of His Son, we will see that connecting to God in prayer is absolutely essential to cultivating a heart that longs for Christ’s appearing.

7 Benefits of Deep Sleep

Each Saturday I try to go to bed early to make sure I have a full 8 hours of restful sleep before I head to church to preach the Word of God.   How do you prepare for Sunday?

Here is an article I thought you would enjoy:

7 Benefits of Deep Sleep

I’ve been benefiting from this book’s comprehensive view of rest. As the subtitle says, “Why sleep alone is not enough.” But it is an important foundation, as Edlund outlines in chapter 1.

Here’s a summary:

1. Sleep Is Necessary for Weight Control.

From 2003 to 2009, multiple population studies around the world have shown that people who sleep fewer than seven hours, especially those getting fewer than six hours of sleep, gain appreciable weight. In the small-scale, short-term studies done in 2008, sleeping an extra 30 to 60 minutes a night decreased weight. Some people rapidly shed 10 to 15 pounds.

2. Sleep Is Required for Memory and Learning.

The better you sleep, the more you learn. The deeper the sleep, the better our learning. But research at Harvard has shown that short periods of daytime sleep—even as short as a six-minute nap—can improve memory.

3. Sleep Is Needed to Prevent Major Clinical Depression.

When people sleep enough, their mood quickly improves. And getting enough sleep should also go a long way toward preventing major clinical depression, an illness whose rates have been doubling and tripling among Americans over the last 30 years.

4. Sleep Is Required to Grow New Brain Cells.

This has only been discovered in the past few years, overthrowing years of scientific dogma.

5. Sleep Is Needed to Avoid Colds and Fight Off Infection.

Rest is more than restoration. Rest is on the front lines of your infection defense system. It keeps your immune system going. Rest prevents infection. Rest well, stay well.

6. Enough Sleep Prevents Plaque From Forming in Your Arteries, Preventing Heart Attack and Stroke.

Arterial plaque is the basis of the majority of heart attacks and strokes, and fortunately for us, good sleep can prevent its even getting started.

7. Proper Sleep Is Required to Maintain and Strengthen the Inner Clocks That Regulate Our Lives.

It doesn’t really matter when you sleep; what does matter is the regularity of your pattern, when you wake and when you sleep. Your clocks are regular in their timing for a reason. Life is rhythmic. So is sleep. To know when to sleep, it pays to know a little about your own inner music.

A prayer for comfort....

On a November day in 1963, the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson and Mike Love wrote a song quite unlike the band’s typically upbeat tunes. It was a mournful song about love that’s been lost.
Mike said later, “As hard as that kind of loss is, the one good that comes from it is having had the experience of being in love in the first place.” They titled it “The Warmth of the Sun.”

Sorrow serving as a catalyst for songwriting is nothing new. Some of David’s most moving psalms were penned in times of deep personal loss, including Psalm 6. Though we aren’t told the events that prompted its writing, the lyrics are filled with grief, “I am weary with my groaning; all night I make my bed swim, I drench my couch with my tears. My eye wastes away because of grief” (vv.6-7).

But that’s not where the song ends. David knew pain and loss, but he also knew God’s comfort. And so he wrote, “The Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer” (v.9).

In his grief, David not only found a song, he also found reason to trust God, whose faithfulness bridges all of life’s hard seasons. In the warmth of His presence, our sorrows gain a hopeful perspective.

Heavenly Father, life can be so wonderful, but also
so hard. Help us to seek You in the good times as
well as the bad. Help us to always be mindful that
You are our sure hope in a world that doesn’t always seem to care.

A song of sadness can turn our hearts to the God whose joy for us is forever.

North Raleigh Church of the Nazarene - A House of Prayer

“The life of the church is the highest life, and its office is to pray. Its prayer life is the highest life, the most fragrant, the most conspicuous. When God’s house on the earth is a house of prayer, then God’s house in heaven is busy and powerful in its plans and movements.

‘For mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people’ (Isaiah 56:7), says our God. Then, His earthly armies are clothed with the triumphs and spoils of victory, and His enemies are defeated on every hand… The very life and prosperity of God’s cause - even its very existence - depend on prayer. And the advance and triumph of His cause depend on one thing: that we ask of Him.”                           E. M. Bounds

Plan NOW to join us NEXT WEDNESDAY for a time of prayer and praise with thanksgiving beginning at 6:30pm.  Do not miss this moving of God upon us.
In the Spring of each year we experience the power of God in a 24 hour prayer vigil.
On Good Friday each year we gather for communion and observance of the passion of Christ.  On Wednesday November 18th we will gather to fulfill the Word of the Lord as a House of Prayer and see the moving of the Holy Spirit in a powerful way.  Come - and see if God does not answer prayer and move mightily in our midst!

High School Coach Joe Kennedy Ousted for Prayer

Joe Kennedy, Bremerton High School’s assistant football coach has been praying on the 50-yard-line after games since 2008. And for years, players and fans have voluntarily joined him.

Recently, the school district instructed him to stop his post-game prayers as they felt it was violating federal law, but he kept praying. Kennedy requested a religious accommodation, but was denied. Now, he has been placed on paid administration leave pending investigation by the District.

“Effective immediately, pending further District review of your conduct, you are placed on paid administrative leave from your position as an assistant coach with the Bremerton High School football program,” the superintendent wrote. “You may not participate, in any capacity, in BHS football program activities.”
Kennedy refuses to bend to their requests and is “prepared to sue under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, claiming that his rights have been violated,” according to The Blaze.

Mike Berry is the senior counsel for the Liberty Institute and plans to defend Kennedy’s religious freedom. Berry said, “Based on their denial of the religious accommodation, we are going to initiate legal proceedings against the school district this week. We’re still hopeful and willing to talk to the district and meet with them … in hopes that we can resolve this without having to resort to legal proceedings.”

Kennedy wants to teach students values by praying and taking a stand. “I want to teach my kids those same values; that you have to take a stand for what is right, even if it might cost you,” Kennedy said. “So, I can’t not do this. I have to continue to be a role model, even if some think it’s unpopular.”

The main point of my message today - Be Fighting!

Today my voice was strong enough to preach and I was so determined to preach the message God placed in my heart for today.  This message is the 4th of 5 messages in this teaching series.

Preparing for Christ’s return requires growing in faithfulness to God. As the return of Christ draws near, Scripture promises that we will face opposition to our faith, both from Satan and from other people. As we seek to fight against these forces and stand firm in our faith, we must look to the One who is perfect in faithfulness. God’s faithfulness relates to His trustworthiness and commitment to His children and the promises He has made them.

"Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word of the Lord will spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did also with you; and that we will be rescued from perverse and evil men; for not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. We have confidence in the Lord concerning you that you are doing and will continue to do what we command. May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ."                                                              2 Thessalonians 3: 1–5

What does it mean to be "fighting"?

Here is a portion of the example I gave:

Tony and Elizabeth Jordan have it all – great jobs, a beautiful daughter, and their dream house. Be appearances can be deceiving. Tony and Elizabeth Jordan’s world is actually crumbling under the strain of a failing marriage. While Tony basks in his professional success and flirts with temptation, Elizabeth resigns herself to increasing bitterness. But their lives take an unexpected turn when Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clara, and is challenged to establish a “war room” and battle plan for prayer for her family. The war is raging and Elizabeth receives word that her husband Tony is facing temptation. She goes to her “war room” and goes into battle with Satan through prayer and the Word.

This is a turning point in the movie WAR ROOM
  – get ready to rumble!

Please excuse the closing invite to view the movie ...  I was able to show the complete scene at church today - but due to copyright not able to post it here.
