Reflections from my messge at NRN July 28 2013
Today our worship center was filled with a wonderful season of singing praise unto our great God and then a time of prayer that was blessed by God. Then the time for the message came and BOOM!
Laughter was heard across the room and the Word of God was presented in a unique way today.

Preparing for worship on July 28 2013
As I prepare for worship tomorrow at NRN I am filled with excitement about my message and our time together. God has spoken to my spirit recently about my sermons and sermon preparation. I have had the privilege to preach in front of thousands of people at one time or hundreds of people at each of three services on a Sunday morning. I now preach on Sunday morning to less than 100 people each week. I have resolved to prepare my sermons for the proclamation of the Gospel, to glorify God and extol the name of Jesus Christ! I spend as much time or more each week preparing my sermons, knowing and believing that God will be pleased by my study and preparation and will anoint His Word! I preach to less than 100 people with a sermon that could be preached before thousands. In fact, I believe our church is on the verge of explosive growth in the days ahead and I will be preaching to well over 100 people each Sunday before the snow falls in the Triangle Area of NC this year.
My audience is not those who come to listen, but God and God alone. I pray He will be pleased.
This Sunday we will feature a time of laughter and fun followed by our church picnic. We are in the heart of the summer and I think a perfect time to laugh in church.

Our new pastor...
A preacher transformed himself into a homeless person and
went to the church that he was to be introduced as the head pastor at that
morning. He walked around his soon to be church for 30 minutes while it was
filling with people for service....only 3 people said hello to him. He asked
people for change to buy food....NO ONE in the church gave him change. He went
into the sanctuary to sit down in the front of the church and was told the
ushers he would sit in the back. He greeted people to be greeted back with
stares and dirty looks, with people looking down on him and judging him.
As he sat in the
back of the church, he listened to the church announcements and such. When all
that was done, the elders went up and were excited to introduce the new pastor
of the church to the congregation........"We would like to introduce to
you our new Pastor"....The congregation looked around clapping with joy
and anticipation.....The homeless man sitting in the back stood up.....and
started walking down the aisle.....the clapping stopped with ALL eyes on
him....he walked up the altar and took the microphone from the elders (who were
in on this) and paused for a moment....then he recited
“Then
the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my
Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation
of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty
and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I
needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in
prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord,
when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to
drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and

How Much Time Do Pastors Spend Preparing a Sermon?

Most church members give little thought to the amount of
time it takes a pastor to prepare each sermon. In reality, sermon preparation
is a large portion of a pastor's workweek. Unfortunately, this work is
invisible to typical church members. They don't realize the enormous amount of
time it takes just to prepare one sermon.
I recently conducted an unscientific Twitter poll to ask
pastors how much time they spend in sermon preparation. For this question I
asked for the amount of preparation time for one sermon. Many pastors must
prepare more than one sermon per week, so their workload to prepare to preach
is even greater.
I am pleased and appreciative for the number of responses
I received. Here are the results of the poll by three-hour increments:

1 to 3 hours — 1%
·
4 to 6 hours — 9%
·
7 to 9 hours — 15%
·
10 to 12 hours — 22%
·
13 to 15 hours — 24%
·
16 to 18 hours — 23%
·
19 to 21 hours — 2%
·
22 to 24 hours — 0%
·
25 to 27 hours — 1%
·
28 to 30 hours — 2%
·
31 to 33 hours — 1%
The results were fascinating to me. Here are some key
points I found in the study:
1. Most pastors responded with a range of hours. I took
the midpoint of each range for my data.
2. Seventy percent of pastors' sermon preparation time is
the narrow range of 10 to 18 hours per sermon.
3. Keep in mind that these numbers represent sermon preparation
time for just one sermon. Many pastors spend 30 or more hours in preparing
messages each week.
4. The median time for sermon preparation in this study
is 13 hours. That means that half of the respondents gave a number under 13
hours; the other half gave a number greater than 13 hours.
5. Most of the respondents who gave a response under 12
hours indicated they were bivocational pastors.
6. If the sermon was part of a series, the pastors
indicated they spent even more upfront time to develop the theme and
preliminary issues for the sermons to be preached.
7. Many of the pastors are frustrated that they don't
have more time for sermon preparation.
8. A number of the pastors indicated that finding
consistent and uninterrupted sermon preparation time was difficult.
Most pastors have workweeks much longer than we realize
because of the invisible nature of sermon preparation. As for me, the results
of this poll have caused me to pray even more fervently for my pastor. His work
is long. His work is never-ending. But the work he does is vitally important.
I pray that we all will remember to pray for our pastors
every day.

A reflection from my message today at NRN July 21 2013
Here is a simple reflection from my message this morning at NRN. I shared about how NOT to discover God's will - then six principles to discover God's will.
Last Sunday as I sat in a church with over 3,000 people present I could not help but think "if this music was our worship set I know many people would get up and walk out. It was so loud that several people around me asked for ear plugs.
I sang as loud as I could knowing no one around me would really hear me. Then, the tears flowed down my face as the words of the songs spoke to my heart. My prayer that morning was sincere and earnest - Oh God, keep me faithful to call upon my life to serve as a servant leader and lead pastor of the church I serve at this time in my life. I love being pastor at NRN. I cry out to God to grow our church and bring people to fill each and every chair.
My sermon is dedicated to God and I preach to His glory and honor! I want to be found in the very center of God's will, faithfully serving HIM!

Preparing for worship on July 21 2013
Tomorrow at NRN I plan to bring the current teaching series to a close with a message that I prepared for last week but found it God's will that I not preach it until this week. I am even more excited about this message for this week, believing God has something awesome planned for our time together this coming Sunday at NRN. Each Sunday, we have taken the lids of several favorite board games such as Trivial Pursuit, Risk and Monopoly. Tomorrow, we take the lid off the game of LIFE.
God’s will for life is not a mystery. He has made His will plain. He has given everything we need to know His will for today. Author, Beth Moore has said, “When we choose to walk with God rather than off the path to handfuls of other options, we find His perfect will for our lives.”

How should the church respond to the Zimmerman Verdict?
Here is a post I borrowed but fully believe:
I’ve been watching with great interest the happenings
surrounding the Zimmerman trial and verdict.
Here’s
five things that I think:
•No
one won - A 17 year old is dead, a 29 year old is sentenced to a
life of watching his back, one family grieves, both families are forever
changed & our nation is more polarized than it was a year ago. Everybody
loses in a situation like this.
•Only
two people really know the truth - You may think you do, but
you don’t. Think about what I just said. Some people are spouting off as if
they have an inside scoop. They don’t. I don’t. You don’t. None of us do. Only
two people know and one of them is dead.
•Our
justice system worked – Six ordinary people devoted several
weeks of their lives and came up with a unanimous verdict after hearing all the
evidence. Our system is based on presumed innocence, which means the
prosecution will always be at the disadvantage. I’m glad they are. Personally,
I’d rather see an occasional guilty person walk rather than an innocent one go
to prison. I’m not making a judgment on Mr. Zimmerman’s innocence or guilt. I
didn’t sit thru a trial and hear all the facts. I’m just saying the system
worked, whether I agree or disagree.
•The
Trayvon Martin family were incredibly gracious and respectful in their response. I
cannot imagine their disappointment and pain. I could only hope to be as
courageous if I was in their shoes.
•God
can bring good out of anything. His promises are true
regardless of circumstances. He could use this to draw people to him who are
looking for truth, open up conversations on race relationships or do any of a
number of things that my mind cannot conceive. I know that he cares and is a
loving impartial judge with all knowledge and wisdom. I know that he is at work
on solutions before we even recognize that there are problems.
What
if we all prayed for His kingdom to come and his will to be done? We if we all
acted with humility rather than hubris? What if we saw the world thru lenses of
“we” rather than “us versus them”.

We are very excited about the birth of our new grand daughter - Cammie Lynley. We are celebrating that Cammie Lynley is now home from the hospital. Stephanie is doing well. Cammie Lynley continues to gain weight and show improvement in her health.

The message at NRN from July 14 2013
Many times I have shared that my priorities in life are simple. My relationship with Jesus Christ is first and paramount in my life. This past year I have focused and spoke to my church family about the importance that Jesus be in the center of everything. More than ever, I strive to place Jesus in the center of my relationships, my finances, my everything. Following my faith and relationship with Jesus Christ comes family. The importance of family have shaped my life more in the past six years than ever before. God had blessed Sharron and I with grandchildren as our family continues to grow.
This past week we received a phone call from our daughter Stephanie that she was diagnosed with preeclampsia. On Friday July 12 she was taken into surgery for the birth of Cammie Lynley. Stephanie and Cammie Lynley remain in the hospital as we wait for Cammie's weight to increase and for Stephanie to stabilize from the eclampsia.
On Saturday I faced a major decision. It was really a no-brainier as I had prepared for several weeks a message on the Game of Life with an emphasis on knowing the will of God. I quickly worked on a plan to not be at NRN on Sunday and to remain with family during this time. With the help of several good friends I was able to provide the power points and materials I usually prepare each week for the worship service. I also provided a video of Dr. Stan Toler to bring the morning message.
On April 25, 2012 at Convocation, Dr. Stan A. Toler spoke to Liberty University students about renewing their minds to the things of Christ. He urged students to choose a positive mindset over seeing everything in a negative light. After sharing a heartwarming story of a girl who used the word "fantastic" to describe every day, he asked students to find a word and share a smile with the world.
Dr. Toler is general superintendent in the Church of the Nazarene. After serving 40 years as pastor in four different churches (Ohio, Florida, Tennessee, and Oklahoma), He was chosen for this highest elected office in 2009 at the General Assembly in Orlando, Florida. Stan has written over 80 books, including his best-sellers, God Has Never Failed Me, But He's Sure Scared Me to Death a Few Times; The Buzzards Are Circling, But God's Not Finished With Me Yet. He is gifted leader, author, and inspirational speaker. In June 2013 Dr. Toler became general superintendent emeritus in the Church of the Nazarene,

Introducing Cammie Lynley
On July 12, 2013 Cammie Lynley came into the world at 8:53pm. She weighted in at 4 lbs. and 7 oz. and a little over 18" long.
As Sharron and I held her in our arms it flooded our minds with memories of Danielle and Stephanie who weighed 4 lbs. 2 oz. and 4 lbs. 3 oz.

Today Stephanie remains in the hospital. Here is a portion of the prayer request we sent to our church family over the weekend:
Stephanie was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and is now being treated for symptoms of postpartum eclampsia. Visitation at the hospital is limited to immediate family only. Please pray for Stephanie's recovery and health of Cammie.
Preparing for worship at NRN on July 14
As I prepare for worship on Sunday God is moving in my heart. I am preparing this post on Tuesday evening after my wife Sharron has departed to Charlotte to be with our daughter Stephanie. There is a real possibility that when this post becomes public that I will have a new grand daughter. I am already giving praise to God for His wonderful provisions upon my family.

The prayer I pray each day
1 Chronicles 4:10 contains one of the shortest, simplest,
most powerful prayers ever prayed:
“Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh that you would
bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from
harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.”
I pray these four prayers every morning:
1. Lord, would you bless me today in every way YOU want
to bless me.
2. Would you increase my territory so that I can be used
more effectively by you.
3. Would you place your hand upon me, and use it to touch
others.
4. And would you keep me from harm and harm from me.
God wants to increase the size of your responsibilities.
Jesus came to build his church. Ask him to entrust as much of the building of
it to you as you can handle. Then ask him to enlarge the territory of your
heart and character so you can handle more. Life on earth is about training for
reigning with him in heaven. Grow as big as you can.
God wants to place his hand upon you. Invite him to do so
every day.
And God wants to steer you towards significance and away
from pain (unless that pain will result in your gain), so ask him for that as
well. – Jabez did, and “God granted his request.”
I not only pray this prayer for myself, I pray it for Sharron and my family and my church family, every day.
I have discovered that there seems to be a cumulative effect to this prayer. It could be that prayers are like seeds sown in the ground. You pray them and tend them, and after an interval, they begin to sprout and grow.

A Church Rebounds With a Change of Heart
How a commitment to love people as they are brought
growth to Creekside Church.
During its heyday during the Jesus movement in the late
1970s, Creekside Church—known then as Christ Church of Northgate—was afire with 2,000
members.
But the Seattle church declined precipitously in the
ensuing years, dropping to 350 members by 1995.
“By the time Pastor Don Ross came, we were a pretty
hurting church,” says church elder Rick Hertzog, 60, a Seattle resident and
travel agency owner. “We had undergone a church split. So we were definitely
not reaching out to other people.”
In his first decade at the church, Ross worked to address
many of the issues behind the decline. Nonetheless, attendance continued to
fall, reaching 175 in 2004.
“We were like a leper colony for Jesus,” Ross says.
“Nobody wanted to be with us, but at least we had each other.”
In 2005, the church sold its four-acre,
80,000-square-foot campus and relocated to a 10-acre elementary school campus
in nearby Mountlake Terrace, Wash.
Then, during a leadership meeting, Hertzog made a
poignant remark: “Nothing is going to change in our church just because we’ve
had a change of address. Our hearts have to change.”
Inspired by the comment, Ross asked God to transform his
heart. Not long afterward, Ross realized the change he needed to make was to
“just love the people.”
While praying one day, Ross says the Lord asked him, “If
this church never grows by one more person, will you love the 175 that are here
and lead them to heaven?”
“At that point, we had not had a new visitor in over two
years,” Ross says. “After that conversation, when I started promising to love
people just the way they are, visitors just started showing up.”
As Ross loved his flock, a “genuine change of heart”
spread throughout the congregation. As the church grew, Ross says his
congregation started praying and caring for others at a deeper level.
In 2009, shortly before the church finished remodeling
the new campus, Ross asked everyone to write on an unpainted wall the name of a
friend, neighbor or co-worker they wanted to come to Jesus.
On Easter, Christmas and other major holidays, Ross also
encouraged his flock—in what became known as “3-1-1”—to write down the names of
three people they wanted to receive Jesus, and to pray for them each day at 1
p.m. for a minute.
In short order, more and more people came to the church,
and many received Christ and got baptized.
“It created a ripple effect as more people began to bring
their friends to church,” Ross says. “Now, we have three or four generations
that have come to our church, meaning three years ago they brought a friend and
that friend brought a friend and so on. You can track back three or four
spiritual generations of people who have brought their friends to church.”
Today, Creekside Church has about 1,500 people who call
it their “church home,” with about 600 attending on any given Sunday.

Church Coaching Network, works with pastors to teach them the principles,
both internal and external, to help them lead a turnaround in their church too.

Show you believe by belonging
"Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples." (John 13:35 NLT)
The Bible says a Christian without a church
home is like an organ without a body, a sheep without a flock, or a child
without a family. It is an unnatural state. The Bible says, “You belong in
God’s household with every other Christian” (Ephesians 2:19b LB).
Today’s culture of independent individualism
has created many spiritual orphans—“bunny believers” who hop around from one
church to another without any identity, accountability, or commitment. Many
believe it is possible to be a “good Christian” without joining (or even attending)
a local church, but God would strongly disagree.
The church is so significant that Jesus died
on the cross for it: “Christ loved the church and gave his life for it”
(Ephesians 5:25 GW).
Except for a few important exceptions
referring to all believers throughout history, almost every time the word
"church" is used in the Bible it refers to a local, visible
congregation.
The New Testament assumes membership in a
local congregation. The only Christians not members of a local fellowship
were those under church discipline who had been removed from the fellowship
because of gross public sin
(1 Corinthians 5:1-13; Galatians 6:1-5).
The Bible offers many compelling reasons why
you need to be committed and active in a local fellowship.
A church family identifies you as a genuine
believer. I can’t claim to follow Christ if I’m not committed to any specific
group of disciples. Jesus said, “Your love for one another will prove to the
world that you are my disciples” (John 13:35 NLT).
When we come together in love as a church
family from different backgrounds, race, and social status, it is a witness
to the world (Galatians 3:28 MSG; see also John 17:21).
